Concert Facts:

#1

The Hebrides Overture was inspired by Mendelssohn's visit to the Scottish island of Staffa in 1829. While on a boat trip to the famous Fingal's Cave, Mendelssohn was struck by the dramatic sight and sound of the waves crashing against the basalt columns of the cave. The overture captures the power, mystery, and beauty of the scene, evoking the feeling of the cave’s dark, echoing interior.

#2

Rebecca Clarke's Viola Sonata (1921) is one of the most significant works in the viola repertoire, but it was largely forgotten for decades, overshadowed by the dominance of male composers in classical music. The sonata was rediscovered in the 1970s and has since become a beloved work in the viola community.

#3

Symphony No.104 is Haydn's final symphony and was composed during his second visit to London in 1795. It’s often considered a grand finale to his symphonic career, showcasing his mastery of form, wit, and invention in a style that was both refined and emotionally engaging.
